Club Vision and

Upcoming Opportunities

Last week was Club Assembly and Chad Lee shared his vision for the club, highlighting two main priorities for the year: Service Above Self and growing our membership. He encourages everyone to think about the business owners, colleagues, and friends they know who would make great Rotarians and to invite them to upcoming meetings. Chad’s efforts are already showing results, with one new member inducted and several more ready to join soon.

Steve Cesar, our Community Service Chair, is actively seeking ideas from members on how we can better serve our community. He hopes to organize at least one community project every month. Recent and upcoming events include the annual Turtle Races at the Jackson County Fair in August and a trash cleanup at Altus Reservoir planned for September. If you want to get involved, Steve is your go-to person.

Larry Duffy gave a brief overview of the Rotary Foundation, explaining the giving levels and how members can become Paul Harris Fellows. He plans to provide a more in-depth program later in the year about ways to support Rotary’s mission.

If you have any ideas you would like to share regarding the club, please reach out to Chad or any of your board members. Your thoughts and suggestions are always welcome!

Turtle Races at the Jackson County Fair

The Jackson County Fair’s Turtle Races are a beloved tradition that brings fun and excitement to fairgoers of all ages. During this unique event, turtles compete on a simple, round track, with spectators cheering them on as they slowly and steadily make their way to the outside of the circle. It’s a charming twist on typical racing events, offering a playful pace that allows everyone to enjoy the suspense. The races feature turtles of all sizes, some with quirky names, adding to the lighthearted atmosphere.

The event is hosted annually by the Altus Rotary Club. Altus Rotarians, Western Rotaract students, and Altus High School Interact students join together to register participants and manage the races. The event is a part of the fair’s entertainment lineup providing a great opportunity for families to gather, laugh, and enjoy some friendly competition. Whether you’re rooting for a favorite turtle or just curious about this slow-motion showdown, the Jackson County Fair turtle races guarantee smiles and memorable moments!
