Last week, we heard an informative program on Western Oklahoma State College’s Nursing and Child Development Programs.
Nursing Program Overview
Diane Fairchild, Director of Nursing, shared details about the comprehensive Nursing Program offered at WOSC. This program is available on the Altus campus, as well as in Lawton at the Cameron Campus, Elk City at Great Plains Regional Medical Center, and online.
Diane said that the program spans 2 ½ years, culminating in an Applied Science Degree in Nursing. Graduates are well-prepared to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), which assesses their readiness to practice as nurses. WOSC Nursing was proud to announce that in 2023 and 2024, Altus graduates achieved a remarkable 100% pass rate on their first attempt at the NCLEX!
Currently, the Nursing Program boasts 25 freshmen and 58 sophomore students, including several Active-Duty Military spouses who enroll each year, highlighting the program's commitment to serving our community.
Child Development Program Overview
JoAnn Gray, Scholars for Excellence in Education Coordinator, along with Erin Sturgeon, Child Development Instructor, presented the Child Development Program at Western. JoAnn highlighted the critical importance of early childhood development, noting that a child’s brain develops faster from birth to age 5 than at any other time in life.
The Child Development Program offers an Associate in Science, an Associate in Applied Science, and a Child Development Assistant Certificate (CDA), with the CDA being a fully online program. JoAnn explained that general education requirements for the associate degrees can be completed online or in person. Students pursuing an Associate in Science (Early Childhood) can continue their education to obtain a bachelor’s degree, and those earning an Associate in Applied Science (Child Development) can directly enter the workforce in childcare centers or Head Start programs.
Currently, the program supports 70 scholars. JoAnn, a proud alumna of the program herself, shared that the Scholars Program covers 90% of tuition and fees, with students responsible for only 10%. Additionally, the program pays 100% of textbook costs. Upon obtaining a certificate, scholars receive a $1,000 stipend, and those who continue to an associate program are awarded $1,500 after completion.
We are grateful to Diane, JoAnn, and Erin for their dedication and for sharing their expertise with us. These programs are vital to our community, and we look forward to seeing the continued success of the students in these fields!
