Last week our ROTD was Tim Murphy with guest speakers Jonathan Almanza and Melony Nettleton. They brought an update on Booker's Place, A Child Advocacy Center

Last Week's Speakers

Jonathan Almanza was born and raised in Altus. He served his country with the Marine Corps during the Operation Enduring Freedom Campaign which began the Global War on Terrorism.

Jonathan has spent 11 years with the Altus Police Department where he is currently a detective. Jonathan currently serves on the Stephen E. Booker Foundation board.

Melony Nettleton was also born and raised in Altus. She has served in the legal field for 20 years. She has held roles at the District Attorney's Office and was a bailiff for Associate District Judge Clark Huey.

In 2022, Melony began serving as the Executive Director for Booker's Place, A Child Advocacy Center and also serves as the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Coordinator for Greer, Jackson, Kiowa, and Tillman counties.

Jonathan and Melony gave an informative update on Booker's Place, A Child Advocacy Center. They told Rotary about their new building and invited everyone to visit and take a tour. Though they had been very appreciative that JCMH had given them space to work, they had outgrown the office and needed to expand.

In late 2022, the Foundation was able to purchase a 4,000 square-foot building downtown. The space was completely remodeled and includes a rear entrance for uniformed officers and court officials. It was pointed out that this helps to eliminate some fear and stress that children and families feel during interviews. They also utilize a portion of the building as an office for the mental health providers that serve the children.

If you are interested in volunteering your time, please contact Melony. The question was asked, "What donations do you need the most?" Melony said that they are always needing snacks for the children. She also said that gift cards for local eateries or gas stations are needed. They feed the families a meal and on some occasions will meet a family at a gas station to purchase gas if they are unable to get back to their home.

Last Week's Rotarian of the Day

Tim Murphy may not have been born in Altus, but he is an Altusian through and through. Tim has lived in Altus since 1975 his mother was local to the area and his father was retired military. Tim attended Altus High School and graduated with the class of 1980.

Tim joined the Altus Police Department in 1983. After 25 years of service, Tim retired from the force. He spent three years as an armed Entry Installation Controller at Altus Air Force Base but his heart was still with the Police Department and in 2011 the City of Altus elected Tim Murphy as their Chief of Police. Chief Murphy is in his 4th term and says that "there is still work to be done".

Tim and his wife, Gloria, have been married for 42 years and have one son and one daughter.

Thank you Chief Murphy, you're a great example of a someone who lives by the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self".
